And There’s No Turning Back from the AI Arms Race…
Six months ago, I wrote about two visions for AI’s future—one focused on safety and guardrails, the other on raw power and dominance. Today, that fork in the road is gone. The choice has been made.
Since the Trump administration returned in January, AI policy has done a complete 180°.
Regulations? Rolled back (source).
Military involvement? Full speed ahead.
OpenAI, Google, and other tech giants that once hesitated are now stepping into defense contracts without a second thought (source).
A Space Race Mentality, But Bigger?
This reminds me of the Cold War space race, but this time, the battleground is different. There is no goal. Just acceleration:
• The U.S. just tore down regulatory barriers to AI innovation (source).
• Google reversed its ban on military AI applications (source).
• OpenAI is partnering directly with defense agencies.
• Trump is actively threatening the EU over AI regulations (source).
AI isn’t just a tech industry concern anymore. The global military budget is $2.4 trillion. If even a fraction of that is directed toward AI, we’re not just accelerating development—we’re turning it into a literal financial rocket.
The last two years? They were just a glimpse of what’s coming. Now, AI has entered the “by any means necessary” phase. And in times of geopolitical uncertainty, military and government spending is unlimited.
The EU is still trying to enforce its AI Act, but when the U.S. and China are treating AI like the next nuclear deterrent, will regulations in EU even matter?
The AI arms race is here. The question isn’t if we should slow down.
Just. Hold. On.
